About Old Hazard
Hazard is the dice game English taverns played for centuries, the ancestor of most two-dice games that came after it. We play its old caster's rules. Before the first throw you name a main: any number from five to nine.
The first throw settles a lot. Throw your main and you win at once, which is called a nick. A main of seven also nicks on eleven, and a main of six or eight nicks on twelve. Two or three always lose, which is called an out, and so do eleven and twelve against a main of five or nine, eleven against six or eight, and twelve against seven.
Anything else becomes your chance. From then on you keep throwing: the chance before the main wins, the main before the chance loses. The only choice you make is the main, and the pay plate shows how each one behaves; seven nicks most often, five and nine least.
How a round works
- Choose a stake: 5, 10, 25, 50, 100 or 250 bolts.
- Name your main: 5, 6, 7, 8 or 9.
- Press Throw. Your main or a nick wins at once; an out loses at once.
- Any other total becomes your chance. Press Throw again until the chance (you win) or the main (you lose) comes up.
- A win returns twice the stake.
Pay plate
Everything below is what comes back for a stake of one bolt; multiply by your stake. The numbers are read from the same file the game uses.
| Main | Nick (win) | Out (lose) | Chance |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 | 5 | 2, 3, 11, 12 | 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10 |
| 6 | 6, 12 | 2, 3, 11 | 4, 5, 7, 8, 9, 10 |
| 7 | 7, 11 | 2, 3, 12 | 4, 5, 6, 8, 9, 10 |
| 8 | 8, 12 | 2, 3, 11 | 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 10 |
| 9 | 9 | 2, 3, 11, 12 | 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 10 |
After a chance is set: the chance before the main wins, the main before the chance loses, every other total is thrown again.
Fair play
Every result is drawn by your browser's own random number generator at the moment you press the button. Nothing is adjusted for your bolts, your history, the time of day or how long you have played, and the game cannot see who you are. Over a long run every stall returns a little less than it takes, as games of chance do; bolts have no cash value, so nothing real is lost or won.
